Top 10 Christmas Carols Beloved Worldwide

In the weeks building up to Christmas people all over the world Buy Christmas Trees, do their Christmas Day Shopping and indulge in a wealth of other Christmas Traditions to celebrate love, sharing and of course the birth of Christ. One of the other traditions that form an integral part of many cultures is the singing of Christmas Carols.

The top Christmas carol
Of all the Christmas Carols, the Methodists, Evangelists, Anglicans, Catholics and the Baptists have one that they hold in the highest esteem. This is, "Hark the Herald Angels Sing". The famous piece was originally written by Charles Wesley in 1739. It is said that the hymn came to him one Christmas day when he heard the church bells ringing. The original tune was very slow and somber so Felix Mendelssohn composed a more upbeat tune which is the one that we sing today. In 1855 William H Cummings adapted the lyrics to suit the new tune and that is the way it stayed.

O Come all ye faithful
The Church of England differs in its most favorite of Christmas Carols in that its top carol is number two on everybody else's list. This is "O Come all ye faithful". This classic was originally written in Latin in 1743. It was entitled "Adeste Fiddles". John Francis Wade wrote it. He was a Roman Catholic who fled France and worked as a music teacher in England after the Jacobean rebellion. The translation from Latin resulted in more than fifty different English versions of the carol. The most popular one was translated by an Anglican priest, Frederick Oakley in 1841. He however rewrote it again after converting to Catholicism in 1845. This version is likely the one that you sing as part of your Christmas Traditions.

Number 3 to 10
The other Christmas Carols that form part of the top ten list in the various denominations are, "Away in a manger", "O little town of Bethlehem", "Silent night', "Once in Royal David's city", "While shepherd's watched their flocks by night", "In the bleak mid Winter", "See him lying in a bed of straw" and finally "Joy to the world".
